Take time-out and visit a thermal spa. Not just for pampering: mineral waters have for millennia been known for their curative energies.
There are many ways of “taking the waters”, including bathing, drinking and thermal mud.
You will find hot springs worldwide, ranging from minimal facilities to luxurious 4 and 5 star accommodation, and this month’s SPA BOX focuses on Slovakia.

SLOV AQUA
Just 2 hours away by plane is the “little big country” of SLOVAKIA.
With a history of medicinal thermal bathing, Slovakia is a wonderful place for a relaxation break or therapeutic SPA. There are many spas to choose from, so here are 4 lovely ones I visited recently. All can arrange airport transfers, or are easily reached by rentalcar from Bratislava or Poprad airports.

WHERE IS SLOVAKIA?
In case you didn’t know, Slovakia is part of the former Czechoslovakia, which split into 2 in 1993, just 4 years after the quiet uprising against communism, and is quietly gaining reputation as a fabulous place to visit. There you find unspoilt mountains, villages with unusual architecture, ancient castles and ice caves – AND loads of mineral rich thermal springs, making it a perfect getaway for SPA, discovering the land and healing yourself.

THE SPAS OF Piestany, Trencianske Teplice and Rajeke Teplice cater for therapeutic/medicinal stays, as well as “wellness” and relaxation. Bathing in the “healing” waters can help arthritis, rheumatism and mobility disorders as well as psoriasis and other ailments.
PIESTANY & TRENSCIANSKE TEPLICE have waters with a high sulphur content - be prepared for the smell, which you get used to! I PERSONALLY LOVE IT!!! IT IS WARMING AND SULPHUR IS OH SO GOOD FOR YOU!!!
They also use the famous sulphurous Piestany mud in their treatments, as well as massage, oxygentherapy and more.
RAJECKE TEPLICE has therapeutic packages too, and also has a larger range of “wellness and beauty” breaks... and some romantic getaways too...

What is fabulous in all of these villages is that you can choose from a range of hotels/prices and in each village you will find a mix of more elegant as well as simple accomodations.
Trenscianske Teplice costs from £470 for 14 nights (adequate 2/3* hotel) and there is an amazing HAMAM building housing some of the treatment/water therapy rooms; or splash out in the elegant 5* Thermia Palace in Piestany from £920 (13 nights), both full board, medical consultations and all treatments.

For a Wellness/Relaxation 3 night getaway try the gorgeous 4* Aphrodite Hotel in Rajecke Teplice from £145 (or 3* Mala Fatra from £76) – 1/2 board and selected treatments .

The choice really is yours!

Lastly, stay at the 3/4* Aquacity Poprad, where “carbon offsestting” are the buzzwords, and where thermal mineral waters from the underground lake are used to heat the hotel. Here are indoor and outdoor thermal pools - with fun and relaxation in mind - a conference centre worthy of any international wholistic (or other) get together, and Vital World, full of aromatic steamrooms and relaxation spaces, plus a state-of-the-art cryotherapy unit.
With 3* Seasons hotel prices from £112.50 (plus flights) per person for 3 nights (1/2 board and all thermal water pools/vitalworld), all this and more is the vision of “green” industrialist Mr Jan Telensky.
